volley for a cure

The gym at Mokena Jr. High on Tuesday, March 19 was packed for a reason: to support the Cancer Support Center. During the 12th annual Volley for a Cure game, teachers and staff from Mokena 159 took on members from the Mokena Police and Fire Departments. Also in attendance were Village of Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer and members from the Cancer Support Center.

Playing for Mokena 159 were Paul Vroom, Kari Dobbelhoff, Danielle Thieman, Jennifer Macie, Mallory Ancira, Cindy Storino, Megan Sorensen, Ashley Vicich, Andy Boss, Kelli LeGrand, Crystal Grimes, Cherie Stoffa, Robyn Darnell, Liz Cantore, Kristin Johnson, and Brittany Kocher. The competition was incredibly fierce this year. Unfortunately the Mokena 159 staff fell short of victory to the first responders.

Community members were able to purchase raffle tickets for a multitude of amazing prizes, including Legos, puzzles, tickets to a White Sox game, a Kindle Fire, baskets of hair care products, tickets to a Blackhawks game, jars of candy, lottery tickets, a wagon full of games, basket of s’mores, Girl Scout cookies, and the opportunity to ride to school in a police car. Special thanks to all of the raffle baskets donors!

This year’s game raised $3,777.50, making this year one of the most successful fundraisers for the Cancer Support Center in school history. “I want to thank the community from the bottom of my heart. The money we raised will definitely help the families who are impacted by cancer,” event organizer and Kindergarten teacher Debi Blank said.

Since its inception, monies raised from the annual Volley for a Cure have totaled over $18,000 for the Cancer Support Center. The Cancer Support Center works to provide hope, help, and strength to anyone impacted by cancer through their holistic programs and services. They work to improve the quality of life of the participants near and far at no cost. To learn more about the Cancer Support Center, visit www.cancersupportcenter.org.
